I just got news that my cat Simon died last night. When I left Philadelphia on New Year’s 2008, I didn’t take Simon with me. He stayed with my roommate while I traveled. I originally planned to pick him up in the summer, and bring him to New York once I was settled, but I wasn’t able to get an apartment where I could have both a dog and a cat. Plus, he was deeply loved by the people he was living with, and they wanted him. So he stayed in Philly.
Apparently he was fine, hanging out like normal, and then went into another room, laid down and died. He had FIV (kitty HIV), so maybe that was part of what happened. I always expected he would live a shorter life.
Simon was a great cat. Funny. Annoying. Smart. Pushy. He loved running around that big loft in Philly. Part of why I didn’t bring him to NYC is I knew he would hate living in a small place again. I’m glad and grateful he was able to stay in the loft and run and run and run around. It sounds like he adopted my old roommate’s new roommate (and her boyfriend) as his new family.
He was a crazy and loving cat. I miss him.

So sorry to hear that, Jen.
He’s exactly the same colour and build as my cat, Peanut, who’s about eleven years old and much skinnier lately than he used to be.
Beautiful video and memory of Simon. Makes me realise I must take more footage of mine.
So sorry to hear about your loss. It was great to hear your laughter, and I hope making/posting the video made you smile. I know you miss him.
Simon! He reminds me of my mom’s cat Joshua, who was just the love of her life, and mine. Also bossy & pushy. Redheads.
Your little guy was so determined to get that mousie! I’m sorry Simon’s gone. I wish our little pals could stay with us longer.
@cherylcolan Simon *loved* that mouse. He was an expert at getting it down, and you can see from the vid. He’d bite through the string in a just few seconds every time. So the string got shorter and shorter and shorter. He loved a challenge and was always looking for something new to conquer. He had more focus and drive than any cat I’ve ever had.
@joshpaul and @robert Thanks so much for watching this and leaving a comment. It does mean so much to have a vlogosphere of friends.
@robert I’d forgotten all about this video until this past weekend when I was digging up xacti files. I think I was watching this Simon vid just after he died, before I knew. Funny how we “hear” each other. I’m glad I have this. So yes, go shoot some more video yourself today.

My condolences for your loss. It sounds as if Simon lived in a loving environment. He picked good people to share his life with.
